The Comic Mind website has existed since 1999 as a forum for projects that revolve around the concept of a philosophy of comedy and perspective. Although it is true that The Most Unhealthy Relationship of All: A Guide to Better Doctor-Patient Communication was born out of those projects and the discussions they inspired, it would not at first seem to belong on such a website in its present form. Indeed, adding it to the existing site was going to be a temporary measure.
Fortunately, perspective has prevailed. The last thing anyone who has trouble communicating with doctors needs is a morbidly serious doctor lecturing him or her about the problem. This is far too serious a topic to risk scaring people off with a serious, self-important demeanor. Let people come to the comedian's website and get the comedian's take on the whole mess that serious people have made. All that you need to know is that the comedian did his "undercover investigation" while in his doctor disguise.
As a comedian I can assure you that if I was trying to cover up the lack of a good message, I'd package my message in serious, dramatic tones. The message of this book and the related seminars can be presented in any fashion, because the message stands on its real merits. You can read the book and draw your own conclusions, there is no need to convince you with what would amount to packaging. There was once a commercial for a mouthwash which bragged about the painfully bad, mediciney taste. It went something like, If it didn't taste so bad, it wouldn't work so good. Eventually a competitor ran an ad to the effect of, taste has nothing to do with the active ingredients, ours works and tastes good. They were right, but the first company was right about the marketing value of being wrong in this way.
I am not looking to beg people who need a mediciney taste to share my message, I'm more of a "Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down" doctor anyway. I'd rather lose the intimidation factor and have everyone who wants to check my site out feel comfortable about visiting my site. If the message is the same it may as well be sweetened with a sense of humor. If you know someone who won't check this site out because they absolutely, positively have to have everything related to health care be deadly serious, let them know that their "condition" is discussed in the book!
